Approval from the City of Ekurhuleni

Approval from the City of Ekurhuleni Must Come First

No physical restoration work, repairs, alterations or changes to facilities should start without written guidance and approval from the City of Ekurhuleni.

Written permission and guidance are essential.

Because Alberton Dam is a public space and may involve environmental, water-quality, safety, security and public-health concerns, no physical repairs, alterations, cleaning of structures, restoration work or changes to facilities should be undertaken without written guidance and approval from the City of Ekurhuleni.

Community members may assist only with safe, light litter collection in public areas where appropriate and where it does not involve hazardous waste, entering the dam water or altering public infrastructure.

The community should formally request:

  • A site inspection by the City of Ekurhuleni
  • Water-quality testing
  • Environmental assessment
  • Investigation into the source of the reported unpleasant odour
  • Inspection of bathrooms, play equipment, braai areas and the lapa
  • Review of current security arrangements
  • Confirmation of what work volunteers may safely assist with
  • Confirmation of what work must be handled by City of Ekurhuleni teams or approved contractors
  • Written approval for community clean-up days
  • Written approval to involve local businesses, sponsors and volunteers
  • Written approval to create a community memory/visitor lock feature by attaching approved locks with names to a designated section of fencing
  • A named City of Ekurhuleni contact person for the project

Approval-led support

We want to help, but we want to do it properly, safely and legally. Before anyone touches the dam water, proper testing and environmental guidance must be done.

  • Written approval from the City of Ekurhuleni
  • Professional water-quality testing before any dam work
  • Clear guidance for volunteers, sponsors and contractors
  • Only safe, light litter collection in public areas where appropriate
  • Safe, transparent and accountable community involvement
