Current concerns

A clear, respectful assessment of what needs attention.

The project is concerned, organised, respectful to the City of Ekurhuleni and solution-driven. Concerns should be investigated by the relevant City of Ekurhuleni departments, safety authorities and environmental authorities before any work begins.

Dam and Water Condition

The dam water appears to be in poor condition. Residents have reported a strong unpleasant odour in the area. The source of the smell is unknown and should be investigated by the relevant City of Ekurhuleni department(s) and environmental authorities.

  • Professional water-quality testing and environmental assessment should be conducted.
  • Testing should determine whether the concern may relate to water-quality issues, stagnant water, decaying organic matter or another environmental concern.
  • Volunteers should not enter or clean the dam water themselves.
  • It is unclear whether fish are still present or whether fishing is safe.

Public Health and Environmental Concerns

The reported unpleasant odour may indicate a possible environmental or public-health issue. The water should not be cleaned by volunteers until tested.

  • Birdlife, including blue cranes, must be protected.
  • Fish, wildlife and animals must be considered before dam-cleaning work starts.
  • Environmental specialists or the City of Ekurhuleni should provide guidance.

Bathrooms

The public bathroom facilities appear to require inspection, deep cleaning, repairs and possible renovation.

  • Plumbing, toilets, basins and taps should be assessed.
  • Doors, locks, lighting, ventilation, paintwork and hygiene require review.
  • Ongoing maintenance must be planned.

Play Equipment

The children's play area should be inspected by the City of Ekurhuleni or a qualified professional to determine whether the equipment is safe, repairable or needs replacement.

  • Child safety must come first.
  • Suitable surfaces and structural stability should be confirmed.
  • Clear usage signage should be added where approved.

Braai Facilities

The braai areas require assessment to determine what repairs or replacements may be needed.

  • Braai stands, grids and ash disposal should be reviewed.
  • Waste bins, seating areas and signage may be required.
  • General maintenance must support safe community use.

Lapa

The lapa should be assessed for structural safety, roof condition, seating, flooring, paintwork, lighting and general usability.

  • Repairs should be carried out with approval from the City of Ekurhuleni.
  • Qualified contractors may be required.

Fencing, Access and Animal Area

Although fencing is currently in place, access control, gate management, signage and opening/closing procedures should be reviewed.

  • The animal area or gate is currently closed.
  • Clarity should be requested regarding future use, safety requirements and maintenance responsibilities.

Security

Security is currently present at the dam; however, residents have asked for the existing security arrangements to be reviewed so the area can be safer for families, children, visitors and the surrounding community.

  • The current security measures should be reviewed respectfully and constructively. Restoration will only be sustainable if the area is actively protected and properly maintained.
  • The City of Ekurhuleni should review patrol visibility, reporting procedures, access control and lighting.
  • Cooperation with EMPD, CPF or local security partners should be considered where approved.

General Maintenance

The site needs a long-term maintenance plan, not only a once-off clean-up.

  • Litter and dumping need to be addressed.
  • Grass, pathways and public areas need regular maintenance.
  • Maintenance should include litter control, grass cutting, waste removal, bathroom cleaning, facility inspections, security review, signage upkeep and regular communication.
